General Information
Huge multi-period site. Founded in the Ubaid period and continuing with intermittent abandonments until 500 BC. The majority of the site's evidence dates to the Bronze age and later, there is very little prehistoric evidence.
The site was most extensively excavated by Leonard Woolley between 1922 and 1934 under the auspices of The British Museum and the University of Pennsylvania. The majority of the artefacts from the excavation are held in one or other of these sites.
